---Mission Shawnee -- Working together, Sharing God's love

Shepherd's Kids Cafe

Oklahoma leads the nation in hunger. A University study recently revealed this startling fact. Our state also ranks first in the "hunger fear" category. The majority of students in our Shawnee school district are on a free or reduced fee lunch program.

The school lunch program does nothing to meet the needs of hungry children in the summer time. Mission Shawnee will be operating one of the first free summer lunch programs for children living in our city. Lunches will be prepared at a central site through volunteer help. These lunches will then served on-site or delivered or at a number of sites throughout Shawnee.

One of our Good Shepherd teachers was talking with a nine-year old boy who had recently started attending. During the conversation, the teacher asked the boy if he knew anything about Jesus. He didn't.

This is the other need that will be addressed through the Shepherd's Kids Cafe. At each site, a Bible storyteller will tell one of 50 stories from the Bible each day, in chronological order.

Your help is needed. Please read below to see ways you can be involved.

Here's how to help

  1. Pray for the ministry of Shepherd's Kids Cafe as it brings Bible stories and a hot lunch to as many as 200 children per day. This is the first step in a strategy to begin apartment ministries bringing Bible study and recreation to apartment complexes throughout Shawnee. The purpose of this ministry is to bring children and their families to a saving knowledge of Christ.
  2. Sponsor one or more children. Your gift of $50 will purchase lunch for one child for 40 days. Click here to learn now.
  3. Volunteers will be needed to prepare lunches each morning. We are asking churches or adult Sunday School classes to consider taking one day each month.
  4. Volunteers will be needed to serve as van drivers to deliver teams and food to each of the extension sites
  5. A site team will be needed for each site. These will include a site supervisor, a Bible storyteller, and from 2-4 teenage or college age youth.
  6. Your financial help will be needed for this and other Mission Shawnee ministries this summer. As we meet the need of lunches for children, a large number of other need will emerge as families learn who we are and that we care about them. Prayerfully consider your gift to Mission Shawnee. It may be sent to PO Box 1223, Shawnee, OK 74802.
